October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month — here is a password checklist you can finish in an evening.

Passkeys, in plain language

Nothing to type, nothing to leak, nothing to phish. Websites create the passkey for you; a password manager just keeps it safe and signs you in. 8PWD stores passkeys on the device, never in a cloud.

Passkeys in 30 seconds

A passkey replaces a password with a key that lives on your device. Nothing to type, nothing to leak, nothing to phish. Websites create it for you — 8PWD just keeps it safe and signs you in.

  1. 1

Turn on AutoFill with 8PWD in iOS Settings (button below if it's off).

  2. 2

On a site that offers “Create a passkey”, choose it. Pick 8PWD when asked where to save.

  3. 3

Next time, tap your name on the sign-in page and confirm with Face ID / Touch ID. Done.

Where the passkey lives — and why that matters

  • A key pair instead of a password

The website keeps a public key; the private key stays in 8PWD on this device. Signing in proves you hold the private key — nothing secret is ever sent, so there is nothing to phish or leak.

  • How to create one

In a website's or app's account settings, choose “Create a passkey” (or “Sign in with a passkey”). When the system asks where to save it, pick 8PWD and confirm with Face ID / Touch ID.

  • Only on this device — back it up

8PWD never syncs. A passkey created here works only on this device until you move it: export an encrypted .8pwd backup (passkeys require encryption) and import it on the other device. Most sites also let you add a second passkey or keep a password as fallback.

Deleting a passkey here does not remove it from the website — turn it off in your account settings there too.

Sites that already support passkeys

400 websites from the Passkeys Directory. “Can replace the password entirely” means you can sign in with the passkey alone; “Can be used as the second step” means the site still asks for the password first. Each link goes to that site's own help page.

The text on this page is the text 8PWD 3.1 shows on screen, in this language; it is generated from the app's own strings so the two cannot drift apart.
