Switching from Apple Passwords
Apple's Passwords app is good, free and already on your phone. Switch only if the differences below matter to you — and know that the two can run side by side.
What stays the same
AutoFill in Safari and in apps, two-factor codes, Face ID or Touch ID to open, a password generator, warnings about weak and reused passwords. Day to day, signing in feels the same.
What is different
- Where the vault is. Apple Passwords lives in iCloud Keychain and on every device signed in to your Apple Account. 8PWD lives on the device you installed it on, and nowhere else.
- Account. Apple Passwords is tied to your Apple Account. 8PWD has none; the vault opens with your master password, Face ID or Touch ID.
- Fields. Apple Passwords stores logins and codes. 8PWD adds Wi‑Fi passwords with QR codes, notes, licence keys and any field you define in the field library.
- Sharing. Apple uses shared groups through iCloud. 8PWD sends a single record to another 8PWD user as an encrypted file over AirDrop.
- Backup. Apple Passwords exports a plain CSV on request. 8PWD exports an encrypted
.8pwdfile, on a schedule if you like, and reminds you when it is overdue. - Recovery. Apple relies on account recovery. 8PWD relies on a 12-word recovery phrase that only you hold.
Who should switch
- You would rather the vault never left the device.
- One iPad or Mac is shared at home and you want each person's passwords kept apart with Members.
- You keep more than logins — Wi‑Fi, licences, notes — and want them under the same lock.
- You want a backup file you control instead of an account you have to trust.
Who should stay
If a password added on your iPhone must be on your Mac a second later, Apple Passwords does that and 8PWD does not. If you rely on shared groups with family or colleagues, stay. There is no prize for switching.
Moving in ten minutes
- 1
In Apple Passwords, export a CSV (on Mac: File › Export All Passwords to File; on iPhone, Passwords › ⋯ › Export).
- 2
Share the file to 8PWD, or open it from Me › Backup & migration › Import. Check the preview — it shows what will land where.
- 3
Turn on AutoFill for 8PWD under Settings › General › AutoFill & Passwords. You can leave Apple Passwords on as well; the picker shows both.
- 4
Delete the CSV from wherever you saved it. It is plain text.
